The Bible for Dummies - A Series of Wednesday Evening Meetings

The next meeting of The Bible for Dummies - Jesus and the Gospels - Wednesday, Nov. 19  - 6:30 p.m.
The Gospel of Mark--Apocolypse and Irony- at the home of Susie and Al Ovrom, 1701 San Luis Rey

What Exactly Is the Message of Jesus in the Gospels?
We will host 12 sessions with our guest lecturer, Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson,
professor of New Testament at Candler School of Theology (via recorded CDs.)
How often have we confessed to not knowing much about the Bible, but not
being sure how to solve the puzzle? Years of listening to sermons leaves us
more aware of how much we don’t know. This course may be the answer if you are
serious about getting to know the most famous “book” in the world.
The meeting times will be at members’ homes, Wednesdays, at 6:30 p.m.,
beginning the latter part of September.
The subjects to be covered the first few weeks:
I. The Historical Jesus – Can We Recover Exactly What
Happened?
II. The Starting Point – The Resurrection Experience
III. The World of the Jews and Greeks
IV. Parallel Stories of Greek and Jewish Heroes
V. Jesus in the Memory of the Church
VI. Earliest Stages – Paul and the Oral Tradition
VII. Who Compose Gospels?
VIII. The Synoptic Gospels – Why Are So Alike, and Why Different?
IX. The Gospel of Mark – Apocalypse and Irony
X. The Gospel of Mark – Good News in Mystery
XI. The Gospel of Mark – Teacher and Disciples
XII. The Gospel of Mark – Passion of Death

Reel Theology - Sunday Afternoon at the Movies - City of Angels (1998)
As we approach Advent, and the "Word Becoming Flesh" do we think that being human is the greatest gift imaginable?  Could an angel ever desire to trade in his celestial glory to become human, and feel pain, and yes, love?
This is the question behind the romance City of Angels starring Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan. It poses questions about the reality of angels, their role in our lives - and what they might do to become like us.  It is not totally a new idea; Genesis 6 recounts such a heavenly dilemma.
We gather for screening the movie, and a great discussion after.  Superb refreshments and wonderful fellowship are part of the deal.
Sunday, Nov. 23, 5 p.m. at the home of Doug and Dale St. Denis, 1505 Parkview Place.

Fellowship Groups--

Small groups of 6 to 10 people gather once a month for a Pot Luck Dinner or an activity of their choice,  New groups are formed when needed.

The Special Needs Parent Program meets at Hinde Hall at Christ Episcopal Church

the 2nd and 4th Friday of every month from 6:00-7:00PM. Parents can share

experiences, strength and hope with each other as they relate to personal

journeys as parents of special needs children. Childcare is available but we need more volunteers.

We like to have 2 volunteers at each meeting and they can be teenagers or adults. A commitment

for once a month would be greatly appreciated. For information regarding this important support

group please contact Nancy Parrett at (619)368-1898 or emailto: njp1@san.rr.com).
